You may not know which engineering registration award fits your current work and experience, which is why we are here to advise you.
Each registration award requires you to demonstrate that you have met a variety of competencies and have a certain level of responsibility through your workplace experience.
More information on each level can be found under each professional registration route:
The Engineering Council also provides an Advanced Course Search to help you identify the most suitable registration route based on your current qualifications.
Step 1: Become a member
All applicants for engineering registration, at any level, must first be members of a professional body such as IWater. Find out more about IWater membership.
Step 2: Review the requirements
Consider the standards required for the level of engineering registration you are aiming for. These can be found on each individual engineering registration page. We recommend discussing these with your employer, or you can contact us directly for advice.

Step 3: Prepare your application
When you’re ready, download the relevant application guides and application forms from our dedicated pages.
Step 4 – Submit your CPD record
As part of your application, you will need to provide a copy of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record. IWater members have access to a CPD platform to support this record-keeping. Learn more about the IWater CPD platform.
Engineering registration is a thorough process, and it wasn’t built overnight (unfortunately!) After you submit your application, there will be a period of waiting while it is reviewed.
Please allow four months for the process to be completed. During this time, we are committed to keeping you informed with updates and any communication regarding your application.
Your application will be supported by our Professional Standards Manager, in collaboration with our volunteer assessors and the Engineering Council. Please note that they are supporting multiple applications at any given time, which is why the process takes some time. However, rest assured that your application is receiving the attention it deserves.
There are three separate fees involved in obtaining and maintaining engineering registration:
-
Review Fee – Covers the assessment of your specific engineering registration.
-
Initial Registration Fee – Paid to the Engineering Council and covers your registration until your next membership renewal date.
-
Annual Renewal Fee – Paid annually to the Engineering Council to maintain your registration.
More information on the exact fees can be found under each professional registration route:
Please note that failure to pay fees can result in the removal of your engineering registration.
