Chance of a lifetime for three IWater members

Three Institute of Water members have been selected for the opportunity to develop their professional skills on the international stage.

Following the Institute of Water’s offer to fund attendance to The LatinAmerican & Caribbean YWP Conference (LACYWPC) in Querétaro, Mexico in November 2018, three candidates were chosen for this exciting opportunity. The successful applicants are:

  • Thomas Kelly, Operations Manager, Northern Ireland Water Alpha Limited
  • Stephanie Hurry, Water Efficiency Project Manager, Waterwise
  • Ross McCorrisken, Asset Planner, Scottish Water

Institute of Water Board Member Sarah Murray, who oversaw the selection process, said:
“The applications we received were of great quality and we were really impressed with all of the applicants’ enthusiasm and their commitment to professional and personal development.”

“We chose the final three members using a selection criteria that looked at their potential to benefit and contribute, their mind-set towards associative work and their ideas for sharing their experience with other members during their stay and when they return to the UK.”

Joining Sarah on the selection panel were Luke Dennis from Northumbrian Water, who sits on the IWA Strategic Council and their Emerging Water Leaders Steering Committee, and Josh Graver from Anglian Water, who attended the IWA Young Water Professionals Conference in Cape Town last December.

Lynn Cooper, Chief Executive of the Institute of Water, said:
“I’m delighted to be able to support our three members on this fantastic opportunity. To gain exposure to the global water sector and to return and share their experience with colleagues and other members will help them develop skills that will certainly aid them in their future water sector careers. I look forward to hearing about their adventure.”

Thomas Kelly said:

“This is a great opportunity for me to exchange experiences and learn about innovative research aimed at solving global water problems. I’m looking forward to contributing to technical debates and discussions, and sharing ideas with water professionals from around the world. I really appreciate the support of the Institute of Water to enable me to attend and I will feed back to members how the event went, as well as encouraging others to apply for similar opportunities in the future.”

Stephanie Hurry said:
“I’m really looking forward to this great opportunity to network with other young water professionals whilst learning and sharing. I’ve never been to Mexico before so this will be a whole new experience and I’m particularly interested in their management of water resources and how they differ to the UK.”

Ross McCorrisken said:
“I would like to thank the Institute of Water for supporting this fantastic opportunity. I’m very much looking forward to sharing experiences with fellow professionals from differing areas of the world to gain insights into the approaches taken and the networking opportunities that the conference provides.”

The LatinAmerican and Caribbean YWP Conference 2018 in Querétaro, Mexico will be the first YWP event in the region, bringing together young professionals from different countries, including researchers, technologists, innovators, practitioners and undergraduate and graduate students.

The main topic of the conference is Water Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America, with plenary sessions designed to encourage delegates to embrace such challenges and opportunities to drive their research and work as emerging water leaders. Networking is encouraged throughout, with cultural and technical activities to enable the exchange of professional ideas and socialising.

This is the second time the Institute of Water has supported young water professionals to attend overseas IWA events. Last year IWater members Kirstin Watt (Scottish Water), Joshua Graver (Anglian Water) and Vyvyan Evans (Dwr Cymru Welsh Water) were chosen to attend the IWA Young Water Professionals Conference in Cape Town. We were able to follow the trio as they shared their experience on social media and they also ran learning sessions in their local Areas on their return. Their Cape Town experience culminated at the Institute of Water’s Annual Conference, which took place in Glasgow in June, where they shared their learning to an audience of nearly 200 people.
