Code of Conduct
This Code applies to all Institute of Water (IWater) members. They commit to it when they join and at every renewal of their membership.

Our Code of Conduct
Our members agree as follows.
I will:
- Treat all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their background, beliefs, or opinions. Avoid and, where able, challenge discriminatory or offensive language and behaviour.
- Act honestly and ethically in all professional dealings; for example, avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts promptly.
- Conduct myself in a manner that reflects the professionalism and values of IWater and the water sector as a whole.
- Strive for excellence in my work and maintain a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
- Foster a spirit of collaboration and cooperation with all members, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Share knowledge and expertise generously where you can and support the professional development of others.
- Ensure that I am aware of and adhere to all relevant laws and rules governing my work in the water sector and my membership in IWater. Report any suspected violations promptly and cooperate fully with investigations.
- Take responsibility for my actions and their consequences. Acknowledge and learn from mistakes and take proactive steps to prevent recurrence.
By abiding by these principles, we contribute to a culture of trust, inclusion, integrity, and excellence within IWater and the wider water community.
Any IWater member who is either registered with or applying for registration with the Engineering Council must also adhere to the following:
- Assess relevant liability, and if appropriate hold professional indemnity insurance.
- Support a colleague or any other person to whom they have a duty of care who in good faith raises any concern about a danger, risk, malpractice or wrongdoing which affects others (‘blows the whistle’).
- Notify the Institution if they have:
- received a criminal conviction, or an adverse civil court judgement, related to any aspect of the Institution’s Code of Professional Conduct (whether in UK or overseas);
- been declared bankrupt or disqualified as a Company Director or Charity Trustee;
- had membership of another professional body terminated as the result of a disciplinary procedure.
- Agree to act in accordance with Statement of Ethical Principles published by the Engineering Council and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
