Institute of Water at 80: Our Chief Executive’s Reflection

Today marks a major milestone for the Institute of Water as we officially celebrate our 80th anniversary.

Since 1945, IWater has grown from a small group of dedicated professionals into a vibrant, inclusive family at the heart of the UK water sector. Over eight decades, we’ve evolved, modernised, and remained committed to supporting and championing our members through a rapidly changing world.

Our founder, Allen Bolton, dedicated his life to the water industry. In 1945, recognising the need for a dedicated water membership body, Allen established the Association of Water Distribution Officers, the foundation of what is now IWater. He played a pivotal role in its development, volunteering throughout the years. We continue to honour him through the Allen Bolton Award, which celebrates lasting contributions to both the industry and IWater.

As Allen knew, our greatest strength lies in our people. Your expertise, passion, and the way you support each other to grow and make a difference are what sustain us and drive the sector forward.

Next week, some of our members and volunteers will come together in Newcastle, the home of IWater since 1991, to mark this anniversary in person. You may have already seen our “80 Years of IWater” campaign, proudly supported by our sponsor Adler and Allan. It will run throughout the year in celebration of our people, our achievements, and our shared journey.

We take this moment to celebrate and to look ahead. IWater will continue to equip our members to do their day jobs, advocate for the sector, and improve the environment and lives of their communities. By tackling the skills gap, addressing industry challenges head-on, and championing professional development, IWater will continue to shape a professional, well-trained, values-led, and sustainable workforce.

Here’s to 80 years of IWater and to what we’ll achieve together in the 80 years to come.
